About

Hector Kunene

Passionate about the arts, from painting to writing, acting to filming.

Hector Kunene is a poet, born and bred in Kwazulu Natal in a location called Hammarsdale. He grew up there and due to the passing of his mother he then relocated to Johannesburg to stay with his father and to complete his secondary schooling. It is when his love for the art began to show at the age of 16 when he wrote his first poem that was published in a school’s newsletter in Brysnton High School.

Poet

Live shows bring out the reality in me. I love the feedback I get right on the spot whether I fluffed lines or I said something that brings out a reaction from the audience.

So as a Zulu poet I praise and I love it when ululations from the audience accompany my poem as this is usually done in our culture, when a poet praises, ululations come automatically so it becomes more of an unplanned and spontaneous collaboration, that’s when the magic happens for me. I love it when an artist is able to project and still keep his persona and flair without losing the flow of his delivery.

Education

Enrolled at Wits University in 2018 under Humanities faculty studying Drama and Theatre, Masters Degree.

It was always lingering at the back of my mind that acting was my passion but I never gave it much attention until I started seeing plays at the theatre. I was fascinated by how an actor on stage can transform from one character to more and yet in one body. It took me time to figure out how I was going to get to the stage and start performances. I had a lot of unanswered questions and yet I had my aunt Mandy Kunene who sort of paraded the role of an artist in front of my eyes. It was funny because I grew up watching her on television but the thought of me being watched by her terrified me let alone performing for my friends.
